Green Mountain Transit (former Chittenden County Transit Authority, which merged a while back with Green Mountain Transit Authority in central Vermont) has just introduced a new feature: using their app on your smartphone, you can track your bus in real time. CCTA has a bus that leaves Walmart on the half hour and leaves Amtrak on the hour to go up and down Route 2A. Chapin hopes to see it expanded to meet Amtrak stops, but the route would need more riders. What ideas do we have for improving use of this line?

Harvest Festival report 10 min
There are some good things to report about the Adams Harvest Festival, but overall it wasn’t a successful event for us in terms of connecting with community members. A brief report.

Chittenden Solid Waste District and Sustainable Williston will team up at Adams Apple Orchard and Farm Market’s Harvest Festival this Saturday and Sunday, September 24-25, from 10am to 5pm each day.
We’ll be sharing information on composting, reducing waste, and sustainability efforts here in Williston and offering a paper tree where adults and kids can add leaves with their sustainability hopes and wishes. CSWD is giving away a free composter: come to the tent and sign up to be entered to win. You can find us in the upper orchard, by Dizzy’s Dozen cider doughnuts.
Other offerings include a walk/run through the orchard with RaceVermont, staged family photos, furry costumed characters, and lots of food, including fresh cider doughnuts.
Drive Electric Vermont is running this electric car event at the Williston Hannaford supermarket. (This isn’t a Sustainable Williston event, but we can strongly recommend any event run by Drive Electric Vermont.)

Come to an event and take a test drive. You’ll be able to learn from owners about their experiences with these efficient and fun to drive/ride electric cars and bikes. Find out if driving electric is right for you.

WILLISTON, VERMONT – Sustainable Williston, Williston’s grassroots environmental group, will commemorate Williston children born or adopted between August 2015 and August 2016 with the gift of a free tree or shrub for each child at the third annual Birth Tree Celebration Sunday, September 25th, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at Gardener’s Supply on Marshall Avenue in Williston. The free event is expected to include refreshments and craft activities for children. All Williston residents are invited. Families can register and select their tree and shrub choices by Friday, September 16th at www.SustainableWilliston.org/BirthTrees .
“It’s a unique program, and one that families will cherish as their children grow,” said Brooke Thomas, the celebration’s organizer. “What better way to welcome our new residents than with a living tribute which will grow alongside their child? The program also helps develop an early appreciation for nature and the environment while bringing together the Williston community.”
Williston’s Birth Tree Program was founded in 2014 by Sustainable Williston member Marie-Claude Beaudette, who wanted to recreate the tradition she knew from the birth of her own children in St. Bruno, Quebec.
The tree and shrub selections, donated by Gardener’s Supply, include flowering shrubs like Red Dogwood, trees like River Birch, and blueberry bushes.
Sustainable Williston is a citizen group active in projects like alternative energy, water quality, and carbon footprint reduction. They are online at SustainableWilliston.org.

To better coordinate with members’ schedules, we’ve changes our regular night to the first Thursday of each month, starting in October.
We’ll discuss the progress of the sustainability initiatives we’ve worked on in the town plan, the Birth Tree project and celebration, and how we’ll focus our efforts going forward. Everyone who lives or works in Williston is welcome.
As usual, the summer months find many Sustainable Williston members unavailable or traveling, so we won’t be holding our usual first-Wednesday meeting this month, but we’ll be back in September. See you then!
